Superb 4/5 bedroom detached house set in pleasant grounds
Single Family Home - Hermagor Karnten
This large four/five bedroom, three bathroom house is in the enviable position of being within walking distance of the centre of Hermagor whilst having the large garden and secluded feel of a much more rural property.
The house has a private drive between a fruit orchard and the garden (which surrounds the house on three sides). There is ample parking and a turning circle in front of two stonewalled garages. There are some steps leading up to the front door under a spacious covered porch.
The ground floor is largely parquet. Off the hall are three large rooms, (kitchen, dining and living rooms). Also, there´s access to the old Doctor´s surgery room (which has some original features and is a potential fifth bedroom). There´s also a further bedroom and w/c, and stairs up to the first floor and down to the cellar.
The kitchen is functional with room for modernisation. There’s a large, shelved, north-facing pantry. The dining room has ample space for a generous table and seating area. The views from it’s large windows are over the town to the East and hills to the South. Wide French doors open onto a large South facing terrace with awing. Other double doors open into a good sized living room. Windows on both sides look out over the gardens and there´s also a traditional wood burner that supplements the oil central heating.
Up the gentle stairs is a wide landing with access to the three airy double bedrooms. Two bedrooms have en suite bathrooms (shower, w/c, Basin) and the family bathroom has a shower, bath, w/c and basin. There are heated towel rails and underfloor heating. The bathrooms were all replaced in 2017. The bedrooms all have parquet flooring and ample storage. The main bedroom, at the front of the house, also has a wooden balcony with great views over the valley.
The cellar is dry and tiled and runs almost the entire footprint of the house. It has a sauna room and the wide corridor with a ski storage area, leads to the boiler room (updated in 2017). There´s an internal wood store and rear access to the larger garage. The second garage is accessed from the drive.
This house is full of original character and has been well maintained. It is airy and spacious and the present owner, who has let it with Airbnb, is always rewarded with positive feedback. The large south-facing gardens are laid to lawn and contain nut and fruit trees and a large summer house. It’s access to Hermagor town centre, nearby Nassfeld Ski region and Presseggersee lake make this property a very desirable prospect indeed.

In 1169, the village was first mentioned in a written document. Situated by a crossing of two major roads, it soon developed into an important meeting point for traders. In 1288, Hermagor gained the privilege of holding regular markets. Through this market, Hermagor became the main town in the Gailtal valley. A mark in the history of the valley came in the 15th century, when Turkish troops invaded and devastated the Gailtal valley.
Some Sightseeing in Hermagor
In 1868, Hermagor became the county town of a district that was named after it. In terms of sightseeing, there are the obligatory market square, the parish church and a few pretty burgher houses. During the summer season, Hermagor is not a very touristy place - at least not by Carinthian standards.
One of the main sights is the small palace of Schloss Lerchenhof. It was built in 1848 by a local nobleman named Julius Wodley just before his marriage. Unfortunately, the young man died before the building was completed. Nevertheless, it was finished and is now seen as one of the finest late neo-Classicist or Biedermeier buildings in all of Carinthia.
Another building worth noting is the small palace of Schloss Möderndorf. It houses the town museum or "Gailtaler Heimatmuseum", where you can immerse yourself in local history of the Gailtal and Hermagor.
Winters tend to be a bit busier in Hermagor, with the nearby skiing area of Nassfeld being the main attractant for tourists.
Attractions of the Gailtal & Surroundings
Attractions nearby are mostly of the rural kind (like the Lesachtal) - however, Millstatt, Spittal an der Drau and Seeboden are within relatively easy reach. Going north, you will get to the National Park Hohe Tauern with Heiligenblut and the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße as the most popular places. Lienz in Eastern Tyrol is also a very scenic city best accessed from Western Carinthia.
